When an MMF can make sense
An MMF can be useful when you want a market-linked short-term return and can work with the provider's redemption process. Current October 2026 leaders are around 11%, but that rate can move. Compare the latest MMF table, fees and withdrawal terms rather than treating one week's yield as permanent.
When a savings account can make sense
A savings account can make sense when immediate access and simplicity matter more than maximising yield. CBK reported an average savings rate of 3.54% for August 2026. Your bank's actual rate can be higher or lower.
For an emergency buffer that may be needed instantly, that liquidity can be valuable even if the rate is lower than an MMF.
When a fixed deposit can make sense
A fixed deposit can fit money that can remain untouched for a defined period. CBK's average deposit rate was 6.91% in August 2026, but individual banks can quote different fixed-deposit rates depending on amount and term.
Before locking the money, ask what happens if you break the deposit early and whether interest is reduced or lost.
The protection difference matters
KDIC currently protects eligible deposits up to KSh500,000 per depositor per member institution when a bank is placed in liquidation. Savings and fixed-deposit accounts can fall within that scheme if eligible. An MMF is a collective investment scheme regulated under the capital-markets framework; it is not a bank deposit and does not receive KDIC deposit insurance.
Which one pays more right now?
Using current benchmarks, leading MMFs are above the CBK average deposit and savings rates. But that comparison is not perfectly like-for-like: MMF yields move and bank fixed-deposit offers are negotiated or product-specific, while CBK's figures are sector averages.
What if you have KSh100,000?
The decision should start with access. If all KSh100,000 may be needed suddenly, liquidity deserves more weight. If part can remain untouched, you can compare the return difference across products. See where KSh100,000 can fit in Kenya in 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is an MMF better than a savings account?
It may currently offer a higher yield, but it is not automatically better. A savings account may provide simpler immediate access and deposit insurance protection.
Is a fixed deposit safer than an MMF?
They carry different types of risk and legal protection. Eligible bank deposits receive KDIC protection up to the current limit; MMFs are regulated investment products.
Can an MMF rate fall?
Yes. MMF yields change with the portfolio and market rates.
